At this time, the Wilmington Area School District will be closed at 5:00 pm Friday, March 13 and will re-open Monday, March 30th. All school-related events and activities on or off-campus, including athletic practices and the school musical are postponed until further notice. Beginning March 13th, WASD will be providing chromebooks for home-use to students in grades 3 + 4. The purpose of this distribution is to allow students to work from home pending any possible days missed from school. Also, students in K-2 will be receiving materials for academic instruction. The Mobile Ag Ed Science Lab has landed at Wilmington Area Elementary School. Our students in grades K-4 are performing hands-on science experiencements that teach a lesson in agriculture. Children work cooperatively to solve a problem as they form a hypothesis, collect data and draw conclusions. The science curriculum taught meets Pennsylvania Department of Education Science & Technology and Environment & Ecology Standards and is endorsed by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Six students attended the National Academic Game Competition in Orlando, Fl this weekend. These students did an awesome job and were an excellent representation of our school district. Linnea Funari brought home one team medal in Propaganda and another in Equations, while Lauren Erson and Luke Coker both earned team medals in Propaganda. Logan Popovich went Undefeated in Junior Division Equations. Congrats to all!!

Congratulations to our students who attended the National Academic Game Competition. Lexie McCurdy, Luke Coker, Caiden Odey, Logan Popovich and Nat Bersett had tough competition against some of the best players in the US, but they proudly and successfully represented our school. Logan Popovich made it to playoffs and was awarded the third place individual bronze thinker in Middle Division Equations. Luke Coker earned a medal for placing 5th overall in Elementary Theme, Mythology and Nat Bersett had the 7th highest score out of 240 students in Middle Division Propaganda. Our students' hard work definitely paid off and they did an awesome job at the National Academic Game Competition in Knoxville, TN.

Congratulations Maya Jeckavitch for being awarded the Ben Carson Scholarship for outstanding academic achievements and humanitarianism. Maya, her parents, and Mr. Nugent went to Heinz Field for the awards banquet this past Saturday hosted by Ben Carson. Maya was nominated by her fourth grade teacher Mr. Nugent and Wilmington Elementary principal Mr. Kwiat. Maya will recieve a $1,000 scholarship for college for her accomplishments. Great Job Maya!

On Wednesday, March 14, a student-led walk-out that honors the victims of the Parkland shooting will occur. In cooperation with the senior class President, the walk-out is scheduled to take place in the HS gymnasium in its entirety for a duration of 17 minutes. Students may or may not participate in this action. Those attending this event will not face disciplinary consequences.

The boys basketball team will continue its season in the first round of the state playoffs at St. Mary's High School in Saint Mary's PA on Saturday, March 10th at 5:30 against Coudersport. On October 20, Wilmington Area invited a budding disabilities awareness advocate to speak to our staff. Ms. Emily Gallatly, accompanied by her service animal, Romily, spoke on her experiences to provide teachers insight and perspective into what it is like to be an individual with a handicapping condition. Ms. Gallatly also spoke on legal and ethical obligations of public institutions that allow all individuals equity in access. Ms. Gallatly is a First Year student at Westminster College, majoring in Neuroscience with aspirations to attend law school and become a disabilities rights/awareness lawyer.
