Chemistry Students visit Pitt for Lab

December 16, 2022 | Posted in In the Classroom
On December 15th, Mrs. Sarver’s CHS(College in High School) Chemistry classes traveled to the University of Pittsburgh for part of their lab requirements for the program. The students completed two 3-hour lab experiments while they were there. It is a long day from 8:30-3:00, but they did a great job…and they enjoyed it too!
The first lab was focused on identifying various unknown chemicals by conducting several reactions and analyzing the qualitative results. The second experiment was a titration process to determine chemical ratios by quantitative methods.
They had an extra special treat because the lab instructor was our very own Wilmington Alum, Maddy Hill! Mrs. Sarver had Maddy in this same course in high school. Maddy earned a chemistry degree at Allegheny College and is now beginning her journey toward a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at the Univ. of Pitt. It was a great experience for our students all around!
Mrs. Sarver and her classes will travel to Pitt two more times this year for the remaining lab experiments.
